Things to do in Boulder Junction
Boulder Junction has been a favorite vacation spot of my family since I was a child. With such beauty and so much to do, we spent several weeks in Boulder Junction each year.
And in my adult years, it’s a Wisconsin destination that I try to return to every couple of years.
We love it for all the outdoor activities, but there is also great shopping and tasty food and drinks.
Let’s dive deeper into the vast array of things to do in Boulder Junction.
Outdoor Activities around Boulder Junction
If you’re looking for outdoor activities, you’ve come to the right place. Boulder Junction has a wealth of outdoor opportunities and some of the best trails in Wisconsin.
Bike the Heart of Vilas County Bike Trail System
The Heart of Vilas County Bike Trail System is a series of interconnected bike trails that run through the Boulder Junction area. There are several sections, each providing its own unique experience.
The section from Boulder Junction to Chrystal Lake has been our favorite for years. It offers lake views, many exciting ups and downs, and twists and turns. Bring a snack and relax at Chrystal lake before you head back to Boulder Junction.
The section from Hwy H/K to Manitowish Waters is a newer section of the trail system. It’s a wide trail with beautifully manicured grass and foliage along the trail. There are several bridge crossings and only a few sections with some elevation gain. This section offers a scenic and peaceful ride.
Bike rentals are available at local bike shops, so you don’t have to worry about bringing your bike with you. Some rental options include Coontail in Boulder Junction and River’s Edge and Lodge in Manitowish Waters.
Take a Hike
Hiking is one of the most popular activities in Boulder Junction. The Star Lake Loop is a 2-mile loop that offers stunning views of rivers, ponds, and lakes, along with plenty of hemlock trees. The trail also features a variety of wildflowers and wildlife, so keep your eyes open!
Escanaba Lake is another excellent destination for hikers. The trail is 8 miles long and winds through the woods around Escanaba Lake. It’s a moderate hike with some inclines, but the views are worth it. It is also popular for skiing, birding, and biking.
